Climbing glaciers

Our moose Calf, Gilly, was moved into his new enclosure yesterday. He is getting so big! We also picked up a new moose calf from the Anchorage zoo. Yesterday Scott, another intern, and I had a porcupine presentation at a school. The kids were in summer school. The presentation went very well. As we were heading to town to run a few errands we got a phone call asking if we could go to the Anchorage zoo. We ended up picking up the new moose calf and bringing him back to the center. How many people can say that they were driving around with a porcupine and moose in their car?

Since today was my day off a few of us had been wanting to go hike up to a glacier that is just across the street from us.  The glacier is called Explorer Glacier since it is above a pond that is called Explorer Pond.

This is the beginning of the hike.  We just followed the creek all the way to the top.  There is no trail so it was just bushwacking and walking on the dry rocks the whole way.

Explorer Pond

The creek slowly began turning into a stream.  We also did not want to slip and fall in obviously.  I did happen to bring an extra set of pants that did come in handy.  Ok, Ok, so I did fall two times.

At the top just before the Glacier there was a beautiful waterfall!  The water was from the Glacier at the top.

We could see the view of Portage and then around the left side of the mountain was the center and turnagain arm.

There were a few tunnels into the glacier.  I would love to see the view from under the glacier.  However, it would be really dangerous.

Before we headed back down I had to get a quick sip of some glacier water.  It was yummy.
